New OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch Apollo 8 Dark Side of the Moon
In 1968, the Apollo 8 Mission, a human space mission to circumnavigate the moon in space, three astronauts achieved the first experience of leaving Earth s gravity behind and circling another celestial body. To commemorate this momentous feat, OMEGA is launching a new generation of Dark Side of the Moon timepieces to mark this milestone in human civilization 50 years ago. The Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 is crafted in black zirconium oxide ceramic that echoes the depths of space, and is accented with a bright yellow color that dates back to the brand s first Speedmaster in 1968. It was first used in 1968 on a Speedmaster racing watch, and has evolved into a color that has come to symbolize speed. The hands are decorated with yellow lacquer, the tachymeter scale and crown are coated with luminescent paint, and the leather strap, also in black and yellow, is sandwiched between a layer of yellow rubber, which is drilled with a milling cutter to reveal the yellow rubber inside, a contrast of light and dark. Unlike the previous Dark Side models, the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Sun God 8 is equipped with OMEGA s famous Moon Watch caliber. The original 1861 caliber has been blackened and polished, and renamed the 1869 caliber, with a delicate skeletonized surface, which is transformed into the moon. The 1869 is blackened, and the main clamps and bridges are laser-etched to create a sanded surface that looks like the moon s undulating and convex surface. The front of the movement represents the light side of the moon facing the Earth, the moon as we see it, while the back of the movement is the darkness of backlighting, where you have to go around to the other side of the moon in order to see the mysteries that have never been seen before by human beings, and which only astronauts are capable of seeing for themselves.OMEGA did not spare us such a detail, and has engraved the phrase We ll see you on the other side on the caseback. These were the famous words of Jim Lovell, pilot of the Solaris 8 space mission, before they entered the dark side of the moon and the spacecraft drifted out of radio range. Seconds before the signal disappeared, the ground control center received these inspiring words, officially launching an unprecedented journey of human discovery.
