The brand s commitment to the smallest diameter and thickness of its timepieces is evident in their creations, as is their desire to ensure that every complication, regardless of its level of sophistication, is simple to use and safe to operate, which this watch achieves. This timepiece has two central hands: a skeleton hand for home time and a solid hand for local time in the owner s location. They are positioned at 3h30 for home time and 8h30 for local time. The time-zone mechanism has been thoughtfully designed so that the watch s speed can be maintained even when travelling across different time zones. The lower part of the dial features an analogue date subdial, which is synchronised with the local time. As a result, the date figures are automatically incremented or decremented as the local time hand moves forward or backward past midnight. In order to create a practical travelling timepiece, Patek Philippe decided to combine two time zones with an alarm function, as if the date were linked to the local time display. The brand added the concept of an alarm, which is signalled by a classic gong. When the alarm function is triggered, the hammer of the watch strikes a gong encircling the movement 2.5 times per second for 40 seconds. Like a minute repeater, the watch is equipped with a centrifugal regulator, which ensures that the striking of the gongs is stable and has an orderly rhythm. It is also worth noting that this is the first Patek Philippe strike-ring chronograph with a water-resistant case, which is a great help when travelling to countries with wet climates. In order to ensure the best possible sound quality from the watch, the gongs are attached directly to the side of the watch rather than to the side of the movement as is customary, thus reducing the degree to which the water-resistant case dampens the sound waves. For the sake of legibility, the alarm time is expressed in numerals, with a double display under the 12 o clock position on the dial showing the calibrated alarm time figures. A circular day/night display is also located under the dual display window, with white indicating the alarm time from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and blue from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The alarm hours and minutes are displayed on a digital display for legibility. The alarm hour and minute displays actuate a differential gear train that drives the gear train continuously against the preset alarm time and the current local time.
