Patek Philippe arrived well-prepared at the 2024 WATCHES WONDERS Geneva exhibition, unveiling 11 new timepieces. Among them, the most anticipated is undoubtedly the 2024 edition of the Nautilus collection: the Ref. 5980/60G chronograph. The Ref. 5980 automatic flyback chronograph debuted in 2006, with subsequent releases including rose gold versions and rose gold and steel two-tone models starting in 2010. However, earlier in 2024, news emerged that several PP models would be discontinued, including Ref. 5980R, 5980/1R, and Ref. 5980/1AR. Just as many assumed this model would quietly exit the brand s history, the Ref. 5980/60G-001 unveiled at Watches Wonders delivered a delightful surprise to enthusiasts. Not only did the model return in a new iteration, but it also adopted a more refined and casual design. Featuring a fresh white gold case paired with a lustrous gray-blue dial, it represents a fresh interpretation of this elegant sports watch. The lustrous gray-blue dial features the collection s signature horizontal guilloch decoration, complemented by three-dimensional white gold hour markers and baton-style rounded hands, both coated with white luminescent material. Beyond the harmonious color scheme of case and dial, the two included straps echo the dial s refined tones: one features a blue-gray calfskin strap with a denim embossed texture, accented by contrasting white stitching; The other is a blue-gray composite strap with a woven texture, creating a distinct contrast with its white stitching. Powering the watch is the CH 28-520 C automatic movement, featuring a column wheel and a vertical disc clutch. Timekeeping functions are handled by the large co-axial subdial positioned at 6 o clock. The co-axial subdial at 6 o clock features three graduated scales: 1 to 30 minutes, 30 to 60 minutes, and 1 to 12 hours, serving for minute and hour chronograph functions respectively. Additionally, the central seconds hand displays elapsed time. After starting the chronograph, pressing the push-button at 4 o clock resets it.
