The baseplate and bridges are made of grade 5 titanium, a biocompatible, highly corrosion-resistant and very strong alloy that allows the gear train to operate with ease. The alloy contains 90% grade 5 titanium, 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. This combination further enhances the mechanical properties of the material, which explains its frequent use in the aerospace, aviation and automotive industries. The variable inertia of the balance wheel guarantees greater reliability in the event of shocks and during the assembly or disassembly of the movement, resulting in better performance over time.RM 74-01 uses variable geometry to optimize the winding motion of the rotor. The ceramic automatic OneWay winding system with ball bearings, a dual winding system with an oscillating weight integrated into the in-house CRMT6 movement, allows the oscillating weight to be set according to the wearer s activity level. The setting is modified by adjusting the two removable weights to the correct position and securing them in place with splined screws. As the two weights come closer together, the inertia of motion increases; the barrel will then fall back faster. If the counterweight is at the end of the rotor, the inertia decreases and the barrel winds up more slowly. Gray-black metal-ceramic is an exclusive Richard Mille watchmaking material that combines the lightness of titanium with the hardness of ceramic. It consists of a zirconium metal matrix and a high-performance ceramic that gives the material its distinctive gray color. The production process is as extreme as the material itself. It is not easy to heat and form these different materials together at high temperatures without compromising their individual qualities and obtaining a homogeneous material is made even more difficult by the fact that the composition avoids nickel and cobalt, which are normally used in this family of hard materials, in order to obtain a material that fully meets the REACH standard. After years of development in specialized laboratories, Richard Mille and Groupe IMI have succeeded in eliminating these unwanted binders, retaining only the required material to enhance sintering kinetics through an innovative process that combines conventional hot stamping with a series of high-pressure current pulses. This technique is known as flash sintering. Materials of similar composition are used in bulletproof protection and in aerospace for shuttle re-entry components, external fuselage parts, and brakes for racing vehicles. With a mass-to-volume ratio of 4.1 g/cm3 and a hardness of 2,360 Vickers, metal ceramics are comparable to other high-performance ceramics and are ideally suited for use in extremely scratch-prone bezel areas while ensuring that the entire assembly is light in weight. These bezels are fixed to a case made of grade 5 titanium, which also contributes to a lower total mass, and the RM 74-01 Automatic Tourbillon combines elegance with the science of watchmaking.
